IMPLANT RETAINED DENTURES

Implant retained dentures are a brilliant option for patients that have issues tolerating a traditional denture, and/or have biological factors that prevent a good fitting denture from being created.

Implant retained dentures are a brilliant option for patients that have issues tolerating a traditional denture, and/or have biological factors that prevent a good fitting denture from being created. A common misconception is that implant retained dentures are only for people with full dentures. This is not the case, as there are solutions for patients that are both edentulous (without any remaining teeth), or with existing dentition to improve their current dental situation. Whether you are simply wanting a better solution to your current denture, or if you no longer have enough support from your remaining dentition, our Dental

.

Prosthetists can treatment plan a new Implant Retained denture to mean your desired outcome. The process for Implant Retained dentures is a longer commitment, as dental implants need a minimum of 10 weeks to heal in the bone, but the result is well and truly worth the wait. No longer do you need to tolerate sore spots, or ill-fitting dentures, Dental implants are the solution to your problems.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are titanium medical devices that are surgical placed into the bone to replace and replicate the function of a natural tooth. However, Dental Implants are much stronger than a natural tooth, so you do not need to replace each individual tooth with an Implant. Typically, 2 implants are placed in the lower jaw to support a denture, and 4 implants are placed in the upper jaw due to the difference in bone density between the upper and lower jaws. Cosmetic Dental Design works in conjunction with either your referring dentist or Gold Coast based Oral Surgeons and Dental Specialists to co-ordinate your implant surgery and ensure that the implants are placed in the ideal position to give you the best possible outcome.

There are 3 typical treatment options that Dental Prosthetists use to construct your Implant Retained Dentures.

Option 1:

Implant Overdenture - Gum Supported

The implant “overdenture” may look like a traditional denture from the surface, but it has a very different fitting surface. Once your Dental implants have successfully integrated in the bone, your clinician or surgeon will place “Locator” abutments into the implants. These locators act as a fixation point between your Dental Implant and the Denture. The denture has a custom internal chrome framework that supports a Locator Specific “housing” that allows your denture to attach to the Locators that have been placed on your implants. The principal behind this denture is that the Dental Implant provides the fixation/stability point for the denture, instead of solely relying on the soft tissue, but still allows the denture to be removable for easy cleaning. Implant-retained tissue supported dentures are currently recognized as the minimum standard of care for fully edentulous patients.

Option 2:

.

Titanium Bar Supported Overdenture

Unfortunately, sometimes nature dictates that we cannot have Dental Implants placed in the bone exactly where we would like. This could be from a lack of natural bone, contra-indicated health concerns or undetermined factors. However, this doesn’t mean it is the end of your Dental Implant journey.

The Dental Implants can be placed by the Dental Specialists to engage as much of your existing bone as possible, without needing to consider how you are expected to insert and remove the denture.

Instead of creating your Overdenture to directly locate on to the Dental Implants like Option 1, we can construct a custom titanium bar the screws into your Dental Implants. This titanium bar then has the “locator“ components designed on top of the bar to be perfectly parallel. This allows your new Implant Overdenture to engage the retentive attachments on the titanium m bar. The overdenture, which is still removable, is secured to the bar through attachments fabricated directly into the denture. This technique helps to stabilise the implants in the bone, and allows out technicians to reduce the amount of coverage of acrylic in your mouth, This results in a more comfortable, stable and confident smile.

Option 3:

.

Fixed Implant Dentures or Ceramic Bridges

There may come a time where you no longer wish to have your Denture be removable. There are multiple options to convert from a denture or a removable implant locator/overdenture to a device that is screwed directly into the implants and fixed into place. This type of restoration requires Cosmetic Dental Design’s Dental Prosthetist’s to work in conjunction with the Dental Specialists to co-ordinate your treatment. Think of the Dental Specialist’s as the Biological and surgical Architects that lay the platform for a perfect result. Whereas Cosmetic Dental Design are the project manager that ensure that your new dental prosthesis is made to the correct specifications and aesthetic requirements. Cosmetic Dental Design and our Dental Prosthetists will be here to guide you through the process and construct all the components that are used for your final fixed implant prosthesis.
